Summary
Linglass is an app and browser extension that helps you learn a language while watching YouTube and Netflix. There are 10 study languages supported, including Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, Korean, French, German, and Spanish. It’s a convenient tool for learners who want to immerse themselves in the language and also learn grammar and vocabulary without juggling multiple tools.
As you watch, dual subtitles are displayed, and you can click on any word to see its meaning in context. If you find a sentence difficult to understand, Linglass provides an AI explanation of the grammar. You can also save any word with the sentence it appears in, listen to how it sounds, and see it’s pronounciation. Saved words are then added to a review deck with built-in spaced repetition for later review. For videos that don’t already have captions, Linglass allows you to generate them using AI so learning isn’t just limited to originally captioned content. Language Reactor is a similar tool that offers many of the same features, including dual subtitles and word lookups. However, Linglass differs by focusing on contextual translations, AI grammar explanations, and AI-generated subtitles for videos that lack captions.
The free version of Linglass limits the number of translations and AI grammar explanations you can use each day, and the mobile app is currently only available on iOS. Still, its a useful option for anyone who enjoys learning language by watching videos on YouTube or Netflix.
